The legend has it that the god of all gods was carrying a bag of diamonds. The bag broke, diamonds fell and scattered all over the Adriatic along Dalmatian coast, thus creating the most magnificent archipelago of 1,186 islands, islets and reefs, each one sparkling with its own beauty and each one more charming than the other.

Dalmatians (dogs) did not get their name because they came from Dalmatia, but rather because the distinctive markings that characterize the breed resemble the scattered Dalmatian islands.

The Adriatic Sea, the northern part of the Mediterranean, separating the mainland between Croatia and Italy, has the calmest waters of the entire Mediterranean. Because the surf seldom exceeds 5 feet the Adriatic is ideal for leisurely cruising even by the smallest vessels. The Dalmatian Coast is dotted with numerous beautiful little towns, some dating back to Roman times, each one prettier than the other. They are fun to visit and explore by foot.

Mediterra is proud to introduce small-ship cruising in the Adriatic seas to travelers and explorers around the world by offering a choice of more than 80 small ships, boats, private luxury yachts and gullets ranging in capacity between 6 and 20 cabins (maximum capacity 44 passengers). Most of the boats are privately owned and operated by local owners who are masters in their area of sailing. The Small Ships Sailing Program has numerous advantages over big, commercial megaships:

  1. Intimacy and camaraderie with crew and fellow passengers
  2. Small ships can dock directly in the heart of small towns, and villages
  3. Smaller ships can stop at any place, any beach, stop at small, secluded and uninhabited islands for total privacy and exploration
  4. One can see more places, experience and explore more of local culture and have more fun
  5. It takes only a few minutes to dock leaving more time for exploration and personal enjoyment onshore. Contrary, on big ships it takes hours to get on and off ship especially if anchoring with tenders
  6. Opportunity to explore local life, culture and cuisine close and personal
  7. Smaller groups can create their own itinerary
  8. Food on board is obtained on daily basis from local farmers and growers often completely organic and is fresher, healthier and more delicious
  9. Opportunity to discover hidden coves, secluded beaches, lost island
  10. Swim in natural surroundings, clear waters and secluded beaches instead of crowded pools with treated or dirty water

Small groups can charter their own boats at fraction of the cost and create their own itinerary, menu, entertainment and fun. Prices per person for chartered boats for 7 day sailing including meals could be less than staying home. A number of different itineraries is available, and everything can be tailored to each of our client’s wishes.

We will take you cruising in the deep blue waters of the Adriatic and show you the unparalleled beauty of the Dalmatian islands in a luxurious yacht, with your own crew. You’ll just lay back, relax, soak up the warm sun and be seduced by the fragrant Mediterranean, its scenery and its vibrant culture.

The Adriatic Sea is one of the clearest and most pristine seas in the entire world. You can virtually see more than 50 feet deep. Clear blue skies, plenty of sunshine and a fully stocked wet bar on the yacht will yield plenty of joy. We won’t be able to take you to all of the 1,246 islands, but we will visit many of them, and that will give you pretty good idea what they are all about. Perhaps, one day you will want to return and explore more. Your itinerary will be designed to include the most popular attractions and most interesting islands. Our experienced skippers will lead you to most unusual and hidden places accessible only by boats. Each day you will stop at different islands and visit small sleepy towns and fishing villages. You will also have opportunities to visit some private homes and cellars to sample local wines, cuisine and life. The longest sail between two islands is no more than 3 hours, affording the opportunity to visit many of them. At each place we stop, you won’t find buses or vans waiting nor hungry vendors trying to sell you their wares. We dock in the middle of the village in walking distance of everything. Of course, there will be plenty of time as well for spectacular snorkeling and swimming in the warm waters of the Adriatic and for basking in the warm Mediterranean sun.

The highlight on the cruise will be a visit to Korcula (pron. Ko-rchu-la), said to be a birthplace of Marco Polo. On your itinerary is also the peninsula Peljesac (pron. Pel-ye-shatz) where the famous Zinfandel wines originated, according to the renowned Napa vintner Mike (Miljenko) Grgich, who emigrated from this region to Napa. It was he who traced the DNA of Zinfandel from Napa and established the undisputed evidence that it originated in Dalmatia on this peninsula. We will visit the Dalmatian Grgich Winery and we’ll have a private wine tasting with a top expert who will introduce the wines, explain their values and answer any questions you might have. Unlike a typical wine tasting, you will be treated to plenty of local delicacies to complement each selection of wine. As you wish, you will also have the option choose a bottle or two to take home.
* Dalmatian cuisine was named by CNN as one of the healthiest cuisines in the world. Daily fresh catch from the sea and locally grown organic vegetables are prime ingredients in this cuisine. Add to that superb Dalmatian wines and you have a perfect diet.

“They take you by a boat to an island, drop you off with your bike, you cycle about 20-40 miles to the other side of island and by the time you get there, the boat is already waiting. Afterwards, we find some secluded beach on some remote and lost island where we swim, eat, drink and have fun. Same thing the next day except you are on different island. This goes on every day; different island, different scenery, different food and I never had so much fun.”- L. C. (past cyclist)

Cabins with private baths and showers are available on our air-conditioned yachts and gullets with maximum of 40 cyclists. We provide bikes or you can bring bring your own (credit $100). ISLAND-HOPPING DALMATIA BY BOAT AND BIKE
SPLIT – BRAČ - HVAR – KORČULA – MLJET - PELJEŠAC & MAKARSKA - OMIŠ & SPLIT

This guided cycling tour in Dalmatia starts on Brač Island and ends in Omiš. During your tour you will explore amazing coastlines, medieval towns, old villages and picturesque bays. Highlights include visiting nice beaches, vineyards, pine woods, cycling on the historic islands and exploring Mljet National Park. Croatia is a land of picturesque islands, rich history, Mediterranean vegetation and mild climate and the best way to explore it is, without doubt, by bike.

ITINERARY

Day 1 (SAT): Arrival in Split - Island Brač (Milna) (L)
Bike Course: Milna – Bobovišća NM – Milna (approx 17km/10.5mi)
Surface: Paved, gravel
Inclination: Partly hilly - partly flat
Highest point at: 175m/574ft

Departure at 1pm with lunch as first service. Two-hour journey to the island of Brač is the best time to meet your fellow passengers and the crew. Up on arrival in Milna you will cycle to Bobovišća on the sea. This little hamlet, set on the western side of island Brač just under the top of the mountain, seems somehow squeezed on the sunny slope, overlooking the sea. You will be able to have a swim here or just a coffee. Up on return to Milna we suggest you to take a ride along the coast. Overnight in the harbor of Milna.

Day 2 (SUN): Brač Island
Bike Course: Milna - Bol (B, D) (approx. 43km/27mi)
Surface: Paved, short part to Gažul village is gravel
Inclination: Very hilly, partly flat, last 8km/5mi downhill
Highest point at: 570m /1,870ft

After breakfast your adventure will start with a long, but even climb to the crest of a hill, past mulberry and fig trees, pine forests, olive groves and vineyards. The white marble visible here was used for, among other things, the White House in Washington and the Reichstag building in Berlin. After 35 kilometers long drive you will have opportunity to try domestic food and vine at little shepherd village called Gažul with stone houses situated in authentic Brač platform (lunch is optional and cost approx 13 eur). After nice and long break you still have 10 km to get to Bol. The breathtaking panoramic views of the neighboring island of Hvar on the descent to the beach at Bol are well worth the effort of the ascent. In Bol one can see the Golden Horn beach (approx 2,5 km from the port so take a bike to get there). In Bol you can take a swim or stroll through Bol. Overnight in Bol.

Day 3 (MON): Hvar Island (B, L)
Bike Course: Jelsa - Starigrad - Hvar (approx 33km/20.5mi)
Surface: Paved, gravel
Inclination: Flat on the way to Starigrad, hilly from Starigrad
Highest point at: 415m/1,363ft

The island of Hvar is above all famous for its multicolored fields of rosemary and lavender. The biking tour takes us through small island settlements, fields and vineyards. We ride along coastal gravel road from Jelsa towards Vrboska and then we descend on an old road towards Stari Grad where we will have a refreshing stop. Starigrad is one of Croatia's oldest towns, dating back to 385BC when it was a Greek colony called Faros. On the way to Hvar we are passing through villages of Grablje, a wealthy place of hardworking people who were known for their high quality wine, honey, olive oil, and lavender, and Brusje, the first village behind Hvar towards the interior of the island. The tour ends at the historical city of Hvar where you can climb up to the Španjol, a citadel built on the site of a medieval castle to defend the town from the Turks. Overnight in Hvar.

Day 4 (TUE): Korčula Island (B, D/L)
Bike Course: Vela Luka - Korčula (approx 44km/27mi) or Račišće - Lumbarda - Korčula (approx 24km/15mi) - to be confirmed on the spot as Vela Luka – Korčula is very demanding trail and not suitable for less fit groups.
Surface: Paved
Inclination: Partly flat, partly hilly, last 5km/3.1mi. downhill
Highest point at: 500m/1,640ft

Korčula is the island with the most abundant vegetation on the Adriatic. Its old Greek name Korkyra Melaina is especially due to the rich cover of pine woods. The peaceful and secluded gardens of Cypress trees here make Korčula perhaps the most beautiful of the Adriatic islands. Korčula, along with Venice, proclaims to be the birthplace of Marco Polo so you will meet the name Marco Polo everywhere when you get to Korčula island. The destination is the medieval town of Korčula constructed looking like a fishbone, main “bone” (street) going from main gate to the peak of the old town. Overnight in Korčula.

Day 5 (WED): Mljet Island National Park (B, L)
Bike Course: National park Mljet (approx. 15km/9mi)
Surface: Paved, gravel
Inclination: Flat
Highest point at: 65m/213ft.

While we enjoy our breakfast the boat will drive us to lush green island of Mljet also known as Honey-Island. Mljet National Park is a beautiful area of unique charm featuring two connected salty lakes - Great Lake, covering an area of 145 ha, with a depth up to 46 m and the Small Lake with an area of 24 ha and a maximum depth of 29 m. The bikes we tour around the saltwater-lake, in which there is actually another island where in the twelfth century Benedictine created a monastery, beautifully secluded, and surrounded by pine and oak forests. After lunch you can take a swim in Small Lake or take another self drive ride. Overnight in Pomena (Mljet).

Day 6 (THU): Pelješac Peninsula & Makarska Riviera (B, L)
Bike Course: Trstenik - Orebić - Lovište (approx 27km/17mi or 45km/28mi)
Surface: Paved
Inclination: Partly flat, party hilly to very hilly, last 6km/1.0mi downhill
Highest point at: 940m/3,085ft

After breakfast we will enjoy the sail towards Pelješac Peninsula where the life is very much like that on an island. The climb ahead of you is not an easy one, but you will enjoy the landscape, which will help you get through the difficult part. The cycle-tour leads you into the backcountry and past the most famous wine growing area. Once we reach a viewpoint an extraordinary sight over Korčula's old town on the other side opens. How much this ride will be difficult depends how fit you are. Those who feel tired can join the ship in Orebić, the picturesque townlet, the town of sea captains and sailors. The rest of the group will continue the 18 km long road towards Lovište where lunch will be served on board. In the afternoon our boat brings us to one of popular holiday resorts on Makarska Riviera on the base of the 5,500 ft high Biokovo mountain range. Overnight in Baška voda or Makarska.

Day 7 (FRI): Omiš & Split (B, L)
Bike Course: Omiš – Radmanove Mlinice - Omiš (approx 12km/7.5mi)
Surface: Paved
Inclination: Partly flat, partly hilly, last 6km/1.0mi. downhill
Highest point at: 240m/787ft.

After breakfast we will take last ride of our Dalmatian adventure, this time to Radman’s Mills, a popular resort where you will enjoy the beauty of a natural park and canyon of the Cetina river, known for well known movie Winetou that was filmed there. You can see also stone mill wheels dating from the 17th century. Up on return to Omiš you can visit the fortress Mirabella which provided safety from the enemy to the local inhabitants during the period of the infamous pirates of Omiš. The view from the fortress of Mirabella stretches over the entire old part the entire Channel of Brač island. After lunch the ship lead us back to the monumental city of Split which is under UNESCO protection and it is a part of the world heritage. Here we find an abundance of Roman architecture - of special interest is the Diocletian palace. Overnight in Split.

Day 8 (SAT): Disembarkation Split (B)
Breakfast at 9:00 am and then disembarkation to make your own way home.

SWIMMING BREAKS: In good weather and depending on timing we will have regular stops for swimming while the ship anchors in secluded bays approximately 20-30 meters from the beach or after the cycling before departure to next island.

CYCLING ROUTE: The length of the daily cycling routes is estimated and informative and depends of various detours or short cuts that can be done on route. Sailing and cycling routes may be changed without prior notice due to weather conditions and capability of the respective cyclists on board. Departure is during morning hours, mostly after breakfast.
FOOD: Half board is served on board: continental breakfast and either lunch or dinner. During our cycling routes
we will recommend stops at local restaurants where you can sample the local specialties. These meals are not
included in the price of the trip but are paid by the customers. Also there is a possibility to book a captain's dinner,
which is paid directly on the spot and is offered by the captain and your tour guide.

Saturday
OPATIJA - ISLAND OF KRK

Departure is from Opatija harbor at 13:00. After lunch we stop to swim in the crystal clear sea then continue to the island of Krk - the biggest of the islands. This Island has immense variety in its villages large and small, gentle green promenades bare rocky wilderness, tiny islands and hundreds of hidden bays and beaches. Overnight in town of Krk and there you are able to explore the old town on your own.

Sunday
ISLAND OF KRK - ISLAND OF RAB

Breakfast is served on the ship after which we sail to the Island of Rab, which is known as the “island of love”. The small town of Rab, where you will spend the night in the harbour, is encircled in medieval walls, Romanesque church towers, churches and palaces, stone streets and ancient facades. Enjoy the “gallery” on the streets and squares where many painters and artists exhibit their works.

Monday
ISLAND OF RAB - ZADAR

After breakfast we cruise from Rab along the island of Pag with a swim stop on tiny island MAUN, and continue to towards Zadar in the afternoon where we spend the night in the port. Possibility to join our guided tour of the city in English. For centuries the metropolis of Dalmatia, and today the centre of the region, Zadar has been a city of rich monumental heritage of world importance visible at every step even today: the Roman forum dated to the 1st century AD, the church of St. Donatus dated to the 9th century AD – the most famous Medieval basilica and the symbol of the city, the mighty city walls with representative Port and Land gates from the 16th century AD, and numerous palaces, villas and other monumental heritage. The town is full of great restaurants packed in the center and already mentioned historical monuments that can be found in and around the city – of special interest is the famous Zadar Sea Organ.

Tuesday
ZADAR - ISLAND MOLAT or OLIB

Early departure for Island Molat or island Olib (depending on available space in the small harbours of these two islands). The Molat island is situated in the northern part of Zadar's archipelago. The peace, silence and necessary minimum of infrastructures (4 restaurants, 3 shops) guarantees an holiday far away from usual tourism. Olib is a place where you can rest your body and soul. There are no cars or trucks, just a tractor or two, which are necessary for the habitants of Olib. The island has numerous beautiful beaches. When you come ashore you cannot but notice a beautiful sandy beach near the port. The village is small but wide. The island was inhabited already in the antiquity. The parish church is from 1632, and about twenty Glagolitic codices from the 16th - 19th century are kept in the parsonage.

Wednesday
ISLAND OF MOLAT or OLIB - ILOVIK - ISLAND OF LOŠINJ

After breakfast and morning swim, we sail to the peaceful island of flowers called Ilovik where we have a stop for swimming. Departure for the island of Mali Lošinj (lunch on route), which is one of the most popular islands on the northern Adriatic due to the abundance of pine trees and clear waters. Mali Lošinj is among those places with the sunniest days per year in Europe. Take a walk along the harbor and dare to take a night swim on the sandy Cikat beach or visit nearby, picturesque, town of Veli Lošinj (only 5 km away). Overnight in Mali Losinj.

Thursday
ISLAND OF LOŠINJ - ISLAND OF CRES

After a morning swim we leave for the island of Cres. This long and narrow island is covered with oak, beach and pine forests as well as vineyards and olive tree plantations. Cres and Mali Losinj used to be one island but a channel dug by the Romans separates them. We spend the night in the harbor of the typical medieval city of Cres.

Friday
ISLAND OF CRES - OPATIJA

After breakfast we leave to Opatija. On route you will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful view of famous Opatija Riviera. Arrival in the late afternoon. Possibility to join our English guided tour of Opatija immediately upon arrival at the port. For your last night on the ship we recommend you have a farewell party on the ship while exchanging addresses with other passengers who have by now become your new friends. You can also take a stroll along famous LUNGO MARE pathway to the fisherman village Volovsko – well known for good seafood restaurants. Saturday
OPATIJA After breakfast you will say goodbye to the crew and we hope to see you again aboard Katarina Line cruises.

PRICES: From USD 1,995 per person based on double cabin

ITINERARY

DUBROVNIK-KORCULA-HVAR-PELJESAC/TRSTENIK-MLJET-SIPAN-DUBROVNIK

SUNDAY
DUBROVNIK

Embarkation from 1:00 pm in Dubrovnik’s port of Gruz with dinner as first meal. Due to many different flight arrivals of all participants first night is planned in Dubrovnik, a unique town on the Adriatic. The special charm of this old city are the buildings that have remained unchanged from the time of the old Dubrovnik Republic. Dubrovnik was independent republic at the same time when Venice was, and they were trade partners and competitors. A larger part of the monuments of history and culture belong to the fine but modest Renaissance architecture with some traces of the Gothic style. Use the afternoon to explore the city walls and plan what to do your last night on the cruise when we return to this wonderful city.

MONDAY
DUBROVNIK-KORCULA

During breakfast departure for Korcula (kor-chu-la), believed to be a birthplace of Marco Polo. Lunch on board in front of umbarda (part of Korcula). Arrival in Korcula in the afternoon where everyone is free to do their own exploring and sightseeing. On this island you can find more legends, tales and monuments than anywhere else. Listen to the story of the stone walls, which were built over two centuries ago. Overnight in port.

TUESDAY
KORCULA-HVAR

Early in the morning we depart towards the little island Scedro where we will have enough time to relax and refresh in the clear, crystal blue sea. Departure for Hvar after lunch. Hvar is the longest island in the Adriatic. Here we can find the Renaissance cathedral with its original tower; also the oldest community theatre in Europe was founded here in 1612. The city of Hvar offers plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes that are open long into the night. Hvar is often referred to as the sunshine island.

WEDNESDAY
HVAR-TRSTENIK/PELJESAC

We leave Hvar and continue our cruise towards the little town of Trstenik on the Peljesac (pronounced: Peh-lye-shatz) peninsula, where we will swim in the afternoon and spend the night in TRSTENIK, a village and harbor in the central part of the southern coast of the island of Peljesac; population 106., where the chief occupations include farming, viniculture (the famous Dingac wine), fishing and tourism. The coastline along the town and neighboring inlets is covered with pine groves of pine, offering a fine scenic ambience for swimming. The famous Grgich winery is situated here – have a walk and taste some of their lovely wines!

THURSDAY
TRSTENIK-MLJET

We continue our journey after breakfast towards the island and National Park Mljet to the Island Mljet, a unique natural gift; like the pupil of an eye, you have the island of Mljet, a lake on the island and another little island with a small abbey in the middle of the lake. One can visit the abbey and church by taking a short boat ride; or simply use a small boat to roam around the National park. Here you can also rent bicycles and cycle around the lake. The whole afternoon is free to look at the salt lakes in the National Park while enjoying the sun and sea on this peaceful island. Overnight in Port Polaca/Pomena.

FRIDAY
MLJET-SIPAN

Early in the morning we continue our trip toward the Elafiti Islands. The Elafitis are a group of islands located in the Adriatic Sea west of Dubrovnik. The islands Lopud and Kolocep (Kalamota) also belong to the group. They attract many tourists with their beautiful scenery and sandy beaches. Swimming and lunch is planned at one of the smaller Elafiti islands. Šipan, where our overnight is planned, is the biggest island of Elafiti.

SATURDAY
SIPAN-DUBROVNIK

Early departure for Dubrovnik with breakfast en-route. Enjoy the exquisite natural scenery along the way towards “the heaven on earth” –according to the famous writer George Bernard Shaw. We will arrive in Dubrovnik around 2 p.m. and have the rest of the day free to explore Dubrovnik, go for a swim, or simply join an optional bus excursion to Montenegro. You can explore Dubrovnik on your own or first join our guided tour of Dubrovnik with an English-speaking guide. Take a walk through STRADUN – both a street and a square, a promenade inside the city walls. For those of you with more energy and enthusiasm we recommend a walk on top of the 1940m long city walls! Today’s meal will be dinner. Overnight in the Port of Gruz of this magical town.

SUNDAY
DUBROVNIK-DISEMBARKATION

After early breakfast we say goodbye to the crew and all of your new friends! Disembarkation starts at 8:00 am. Thank you for traveling with us. We hope you had fun and enjoyed our cruise, crew, cuisine and camaraderie. We look forward to seeing you again on one of our cruises.

City of Hvar offers abundant entertainment full of restaurants, bars and cafes that are open long into the night.

Friday
HVAR (Bol) - SPLIT

Our next stop will be the island of Brac. Swimming is planned at one of the most famous beaches in Dalmatia – Zlatni Rat near Bol (the Golden cape - its gravel promontory shifts from side to side as the wind and waves constantly change in shape). Bol is a typical fisherman’s town turned into a popular tourist destination. After lunch we will start our journey back to Split where the last overnight is planned. On our way to Split there will be another swim-break in one of the many bays on island of Brac. Arrival to Split in the late afternoon. Enjoy the view of Split Riviera arriving in Split. Possibility to join our guided tour of Split with an English speaking guide. Split is a monumental city under UNESCO protection that belongs not only to Croatians, but also to you, as it is a part of the world heritage. Here we find an abundance of Roman architecture – of special interest is the Diocletian palace.
